Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, where we share snips and bits of amazing tales by talented authors and writers. Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com then post 8 to 10 sentences of their work, published or unpublished (we like it all) on their own blog to go live by 9:00 AM each Sunday. Then we visit each other and read and comment, critique, encourage--all those things that do a solitary writer's heart good.
Snippet Sunday group from facebook, not us, but many of our participants do both, is HERE
This week's snippet is from a short story, 'Sporulators', more dystopian/scifi, than anything I've written to date.
Could be wonky punctuation to keep within the #wewriwa guidelines.
The snippet:
That's it for this week. Thanks for visiting! I am truly grateful for comments, suggestions, and for you taking the time to read it.
Eastwold’s main scanner came to life; a monotone, synthetic voice advising, “Greenleyone in communication range. Auto-adjusting for Greenleyone approach.”
They roared through the atmosphere, thick as Earth’s—in spite of the planet’s small size. When they dropped beneath the clouds, an unexpected view appeared: a flat world with a blended green, black, and beige surface.
Eastwold spoke. “Sure as hell doesn’t look like a veritable jungle to me.”
Lars looked thoughtfully at the world
beneath them. “Not as much as we had hoped, but not as bad as could be. We’d hoped for trees, actual forestation.”
After engaging reverse thrusters, at low elevation they encountered
spheres-- floating bubbles of green, black, and beige. Some bounced off the nose of Checkup 17—forming
a steaming, gelatinous film on the windshield as they burst.
I'm suspicious of those floating, sticky bubbles.
ReplyDeleteTHERE IS NO END TO YOUR IMAGINATION, MY FRIEND. THIS ONE IS PERFECT.
ReplyDeleteUh oh, this is ominous! About as far from trees as you can get...can't wait for the next twist and turn! Great snippet...
ReplyDeleteThis does not sound good. I think they should have come sooner. Enjoying this story!
ReplyDeleteThose bubbles don't look really appealing.
ReplyDeleteI'm a sucker for planets with weird aliens and heavy gravity (which I assume is the cause of the thick atmo).
ReplyDeleteOoh, the plot,as well as the atmosphere, thickens! :) I suspect those bubbles aren't there for their enjoyment and they're about to cause problems!
ReplyDeleteSounds like it will be an interesting visit to this planet.
ReplyDeleteThis can't be good, right? I'm intrigued!
ReplyDeleteI'm curious about the bubbles. Great description of the planet, I can picture it vividly!
ReplyDeleteA gelatinous film? That doesn't sound good.
ReplyDeleteAre these gelatinous spheres what they saw from above? Is there an actual planet there to land on? Great suspense in this snippet! Well done!
