WeWriWa: Eu75

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors. If you're in the USA, it's the weekend to observe, to remember, and be grateful to those who gave all to defend our way of life. Also, it's considered the unofficial start to summer. May you find joy and gratitude. For everyone else, I hope you're having a good weekend. :-) If you'd like to participate or read tempting morsels from other authors, please sign up--or check the linky list at: http://wewriwa.blogspot.com/

Also, check out the Snippet Sunday group on facebook.

This snippet is from Emmily, Unbound, an SFR story. Emmily is on a supply run, and Adren (the youngest looking alien) is with her this time. He's just revealed to her that they will harm bystanders to keep her from exposing them to authorities. They're now in the store, getting their supplies.

Last week ended with: I draw back my lips, attempting a fierce display of...of what? I have no idea what the hell I’m doing right now. I might be losing my tether to reality. Their assessment of my sanity is way off. I bring my hands up to my face and wipe my eyes.

The Snippet:

Apart from Adren’s questions about specific items, we shop mostly in silence. After the grocery store, we stop at a building supply to buy rope. What do they need rope for?

Three quarters of an hour into the journey home, nearly to our closest little town, Adren clears his throat. “I am…sorry,” he says.

I’m still pissed off at him, at Rael, and Kade. Pissed off at all of them.

“I am speaking the truth,” he adds.

I flip on my turn single and whip over into the parking lot at Chuck’s Watering Hole. I blurt, “Do you even know what the truth is?”

A few more lines:

There’s a flash of something in his eyes. Hurt.

His voice is low and I can’t read emotion in it when he says, “I do know what the truth is.”

Without even thinking about it, I make a noise, a disgusted sort of snort.

His eyes ignite with a fire I didn’t think he possessed.

That's it for this week. Scene change coming up. Thank you so much for visiting and for reading. :-)

  1. Is that fire in his eyes about to heat things up? I hope so. She could use it!

  2. I've said this before but unless this is a reverse harem romance, she's spending too much time and emotion with all these other guys. And I may be completely off base here, because I seem to recall you said it was a romance? If not, ignore me! But in a romance she should be having these experiences and these emotions with THE guy in scenes with just the two of them, building their relationship. It's an issue of romance reader expectations, even in a scifi romance...your writing is very good and smooth and the emotions come through clearly though. Best wishes!

  3. I see Veronica's point--you've made Adren much too interesting! The funny thing about sharing over time in short snippets is that it feels like we're spending a lot of time away from the main love interest, when in fact it's only one chapter. And we're learning a lot about Emmily, but maybe Adren should be a little less hot?

  4. If only they'd told her the truth in the first place. Then there wouldn't be so much anger and many misunderstandings.

  5. I guess he understands snorts too! But Veronica is correct. Who is her love interest?

  6. He must not like being called (I'm interpreting her snort) a liar. I wonder if this is going to cause him to go off on her. Tension is ramping up! Great snippet!

  7. I think he misinterpreted her snort. And that's probably going to cause issues.

  8. We are really getting to know Emmily, and something about the aliens. Agree with the others above. Would love to see her engage with the love interest. Fun snippet.

  9. Oh good. I can't wait to see how he responds.

  10. Coming in late to the story, I had assumed Adren was the love interest. Or will she be conflicted and fall for more than one?

  11. I'm curious to find out what the fire in his eyes is all about.

  12. I reckon he needs to start telling the truth. He's been a bit elusive with it!

  13. She's pushing his buttons. She needs to watch herself.
