Weekend Writing Warriors August 12, 2018

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

It's time for snips and bits of amazing tales by talented writers! Weekend Writing Warriors is a weekly bloghop. Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com, then post 8 to 10 sentences of their work, published or unpublished, on their own blog to go live by 9:00 AM Sunday, EST. Then we visit each other and read, comment, critique, encourage--all those things that do a solitary writer's heart good.
Snippet Sunday group from facebook--not us, but many of our participants do both, can be found HERE
This week's snippet is from "The Sands of Dhor".  Lily, abducted from Earth by alien slavers, is in a room on the ship with a portal she can see the outside through. She'srecalling an astronomy class she'd taken, and how young and idealistic she and her classmates had been, how they would have welcomed E.T.s with open arms.
This week's snippet continues from there:

Then their teacher had shared an essay by a well-respected scientist. In it, the author posited that when we’d launched our little welcome wagon, the Golden Record, out into space, we’d essentially sent an invitation to be conquered. We’d notified any aggressive cultures that we were weak, naïve, and incapable of self-defense. We were ripe for the harvest—whatever they wished to take from us, including ourselves.
God, he’d been right.  Why hadn’t the powers in charge realized that?
Once they were on our doorstep--orbiting Earth, no human weapon could have stopped the bulragers, save for the nuclear option--something utterly devastating to our planet.
But when the invaders reached the ground, there’d been a better chance defending with smaller arms. Still, they had to be hit in the right spot. And that had to be done not by soldiers, but by housewives and teachers, mill workers, grocery store clerks...moms, dads, and grandparents, fighting for our lives.

That's it for this week.  All opinions greatly appreciated. :-) Thank you so much for visiting and for commenting!

  1. Reminds me of the saying "Hindsight is always better than foresight." Great snippet!

  2. What a great description of their struggles! Lots of background and emotional truths.

  3. Okay, so I suppose I should get rid of this Reese's pieces trail for E.T. to follow to my house... Lol, but on a more serious note, this is fabulously written, Teresa!

  4. You've painted a frightening picture of what may lay ahead. Thanks for leaving me with the 'willies'
    Good morning, my friend.

  6. Knowing how to kill a bulrager might be useful information to have, I suspect.

  7. The process you describe for saving the planet strikes me as having a very low likelihood of success. We're doomed!

  8. Have to approach the world with a mix of cynicism and optimism. Of you get attacked by aliens. o.O

  9. It sounds awful. Are they still fighting on Earth? Or is she remembering a lost cause?

  10. That teacher was right but that's no consolation in their present predicament - unless they can find a time machine and go back before the Golden Record was launched! Great snippet!

  12. I agree about us being naive. We have no idea what lies out there. Friend or Foe? A hard lesson for her to learn.

  13. Ah yes, hindsight. What a tragic story!

  14. This is scary and hold true today. There most likely something out there bigger than us. Great snippet!!

  15. If an alien race approached Earth, we'd be doomed. The fact they have interstellar capabilities when we can barely make it to the moon and back... Yes, we are naive. Nice snippet.

  16. A very scary possibility indeed. But I recently saw something on TV that we earthlings are not as naive as some may think. They don't shout about it for obvious reasons, but there are people working in the background who realize the possibilities and are working on finding solutions.
