Weekend Writing Warriors August 27, 2017

It's time for snips and bits of amazing tales by talented writers! Weekend Writing Warriors is a weekly bloghop. Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com, then post 8 to 10 sentences of their work, published or unpublished, on their own blog to go live by before 9:00 AM Sunday, EST. (We check signups to remove links when we don't find a wewriwa post--to save our participants from clicking on empty links--so please have it live by 9:00 Sunday morning--eastern USA. Then we visit each other and read, comment, critique, encourage--all those things that do a solitary writer's heart good.
Snippet Sunday group from facebook--not us, but many of our participants do both, can be found HERE

This week's snippet is from "The Sands of Dhor". Lily, abducted from Earth by alien slavers, is following Theusand. He'd not a slaver.  He's Dhor'en; they communicate mind to mind.

They've left the section of the ship where he and his Chays (monks) are quartered. It's the first time she's left that deck since Lord Sand rescued her from the slave fight ring in the belly of the ship.  He has just accused her of being irrational.   She accused him of causing her irrationality. Then he did a very human thing--laughed, and it has begun to thaw her heart. The last sentence posted last week was spoken by Theusand: There are worse things I could cause you to do.”

Continuing from there...

"Yeah. And I bet before you get me back to Earth, I’ll have experienced all of them.”

His voice went back to cool and even, his smile and his laughter gone. “As I said, I have assimilated the content of your books of learning. “
“When? Wait. How...why did you do that?”
“None of that is necessary to complete this conversation. 'Higher education’ as your people refer to it, specifically health--have you studied health?”
That last question sounds like bait to me. What an emotional rollercoaster ride he is, huh? She just gets a little soft spot for him, and then he turns back on the arrogance, full force. Or is there another reason his mirth vanished?
What works and what doesn't? I'm grateful for every bit of feedback you share.
The following photo shows where I was last week. We drove south several states to see totality. Very cool...

  1. Just because you know it all, doesn't mean you know everything. He might just want to keep that in mind. ;) Great snippet

  2. Sounds like bait for sure, and a bit scary. I wonder what he has in mind.

  3. What an intriguing excerpt - he's such an interesting character and I really want to know more about him - and what a beautiful picture of the 'diamond ring effect'. Sadly we didn't see the eclipse here in the UK but the pictures I've seen are spectacular!

    1. Thanks, Hywela! The photos don't show how silvery-gray it got just before totality, and how the temperature dropped and the insects started to sing. It was really neat!

  4. I do believe she's in trouble with him. He's seeking more than she chooses to reveal.

    1. And vice-versa. He really is the one with secrets. :-)

  5. Ooh, I was pulled in by this. He is definitely an interesting character! I am imagining the two of them together reading each other's minds. This could get dangerous. Yikes! Great to see you and be back on again! :)

  6. Definitely not what she was expecting!

  7. Intriguing snippet. Too bad he didn't assimilate some social norms while he was at it. I think he'd be a frustrating person to be around.

  8. That last line is definitely bait- he's trying to get a rise out of her. Nice snippet!

  9. Certainly a very intriguing relationship between them. He clearly lacks the nuances of social etiquette, though. I see more fireworks ahead.

  10. Never mind what else he might do, I'm just in love with that mental gag order idea. There's a few individuals here on Earth who would benefit greatly from that!

  11. He is so arrogant. But you know what they say about pride coming before a fall. I'll be she trips him. LOL

  12. Interesting. There's certainly no predicting what this person will do or say next, so it sure doesn't become boring LOL. Enjoyed the snippet!

  13. Indeed. It's like he wants confrontation.

  14. Is he threatening her well-being, asking her if she's studied health? What is he suggesting?

  15. This asking about health is worrisome. I can think of several reasons why he might ask, and not all of them are good. The eclipse was great, wasn't it?

    1. Oh my, it truly was! It was one thing to read about it ahead of time, but it was something else to experience it.

You live in a pretty part of the country. Dave's cousin and family live near Greer. We had such a great time. Went to see Caesar's Head State Park. Then crossed into NC to visit Brevard. Oh my, the mountains are stunning!

  16. Interesting. I'm curious to know where this conversation is going.

  17. My, but he's high handed, dismissing her question again. But I sense he's headed for a point about that 'health' topic. Very intriguing!

  18. I'm intrigued by Theusand. He's mysterious is a good way. Although I suspect he'll end up with feelings for her, you've got me wondering what the stops along the road will be.

  19. Intriguing snippet. I wonder where he's heading with the health question.

  20. "I've assimilated the books of your learning." If only it were that easy!
