Wewriwa: EU3

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, where we share snips and bits of amazing tales by talented authors and writers. Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com then post 8 to 10 sentences of their work, published or unpublished (we like it all) on their own blog to go live by 9:00 AM each Sunday. Then we visit each other and read and comment, critique, encourage--all those things that do a solitary writer's heart good.
Snippet Sunday group from facebook, not us, but many of our participants do both, is HERE

This snippet if from  Emmily, Unbound, a contemporary romance with scifi elements. It's in First-person--a big change for me.

There could be wonky punctuation to keep within the #wewriwa guidelines. Emmily, the main character, and her dog, Murphy, are moving to an old hunting camp her dad willed to her. She's listening to the radio--for distraction, and the Deejays are going on and on about a possible UFO sighting.
     Last week ended with this:
"That’s right in our backyard,” they say. I've never heard them sound this excited..

The snippet:

Murphy looks at me when I laugh, so I explain. “The deejays think it’s in their backyard, buddy. Funny, huh? When we get to the cabin, it actually will be in ours.”

He answers like he always does, with a soulful look coming from his chocolate-brown eyes.

Dogwoods along the street are popping spring buds. Daffodils in a cheery shade of yellow seem to wave, defying my mood. I don’t want this, none of it, but I can’t afford to keep the house now.

That's it for this week. Thanks for visiting! I am truly grateful for comments, suggestions, and for you taking the time to read it.

As I drive away, I’m a model of stoicism. What else do I have left? I’m not angry anymore, just sad.

The snippet:

Murphy stares ahead, better at this than me. I think he might be looking forward to another big adventure, but I blink back the water in my eyes. Murphy doesn’t know I’m grieving.

For my parents, for my marriage, for my job. For my life as I knew it.

I turn on the radio, more for distraction than music. The deejays are discussing a big event authorities believe is a credible UFO sighting, possibly a crash. “It’s in north-central Pennsylvania. That’s right in our backyard,” they say. I've never heard them sound this excited.

This week's snippet is from a short story, 'Sporulators', more dystopian/scifi, than anything I've written to date It falls nowhere in a romance genre. Shocking, huh?   ( <--Tongue-in-cheek-sort-of).

The snippet:

There could be a lot of reasons why planet Greenleyone was silent, and Captain Lukarhiah Eastwold suspected  none of them were good.  He tried to keep the impatience out of his voice when he said, “Lars, did you find out anything yet? Any communication noted by passing craft?”
The pudgy man looked away from his thinker screen, pushed his glasses up on his nose, then glanced Luke’s way. “Nothing yet, but I’m still searching the manifests and logs of the most recent ships that passed by.  You know, Eastwold, it’s not uncommon for distant settlement worlds to go silent for extended lengths of time. They do have things to do other than chatting-up passing craft.”
“Because you know so much about the backwaters of space, right?” Luke said. He'd hauled a lot of different types around this godforsaken part of the universe, but this guy, ‘Chief Agronomist’  Lars Stinson, was proving to be a truly special piece of work.

That's it for this week. Thanks for visiting! I am truly grateful for comments, suggestions, and for you taking the time to read it.

Weekend Writing Warriors March 4, 2018

Hello, all, and welcome to March--the time of racing winds--and boy oh boy have we had those since Thursday night.
It's time for snips and bits of amazing tales by talented writers! Weekend Writing Warriors is a weekly bloghop. Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com, then post 8 to 10 sentences of their work, published or unpublished, on their own blog to go live by before 9:00 AM Sunday, EST. Then we visit each other and read, comment, critique, encourage--all those things that do a solitary writer's heart good.
Snippet Sunday group from facebook--not us, but many of our participants do both, can be found HERE
This week's snippet is from "The Sands of Dhor".
Lily, abducted from Earth by alien slavers, is following Theusand. He's not a slaver--and he saved Lily, sort of.  He's Dhor'en; they communicate mind to mind.
They've left the section of the ship where he and his Chays (monks) are quartered, and have arrived at what she thinks might be the helm of the ship she's on. Her worst nightmare is coming true. Dev Areen has just appeared before her.
She thought she'd gotten away from the slavers...
Last week's snippet ended with: " He stood tall, threw back his shoulders and stuck out his chest, striking his terrifyingly familiar pose.  The rooster." The excerpt:
He sneered at her then rested his gaze on the shadow of the Sand’s face. “You still have my slave.”
Theusand's expressionless response was silence, but it screamed louder than angry words could have. Cold filtered into her mind and it had to be coming from him.
Dev Areen crowed, “She is my property. You’ve not shown proof that she is as you say, of the I-tellekt.”
Theusand slid back his hood and locked eyes with the Bulrager.
There was no mistaking blue-black's intent when he taunted, “Stare, if you will, oh fearsome Dhor.  But do consider first, the number of witnesses here who are bound by law to testify on my behalf should you harm me. You have no jurisdiction over me or what I do.”

Well, this is all going sideways in a hurry.

That's it. All opinions greatly appreciated. :-) Thank you so much for visiting and for reading!
