Wewriwa: EU3

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, where we share snips and bits of amazing tales by talented authors and writers. Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com then post 8 to 10 sentences of their work, published or unpublished (we like it all) on their own blog to go live by 9:00 AM each Sunday. Then we visit each other and read and comment, critique, encourage--all those things that do a solitary writer's heart good.
Snippet Sunday group from facebook, not us, but many of our participants do both, is HERE

This snippet if from  Emmily, Unbound, a contemporary romance with scifi elements. It's in First-person--a big change for me.

There could be wonky punctuation to keep within the #wewriwa guidelines. Emmily, the main character, and her dog, Murphy, are moving to an old hunting camp her dad willed to her. She's listening to the radio--for distraction, and the Deejays are going on and on about a possible UFO sighting.
     Last week ended with this:
"That’s right in our backyard,” they say. I've never heard them sound this excited..

The snippet:

Murphy looks at me when I laugh, so I explain. “The deejays think it’s in their backyard, buddy. Funny, huh? When we get to the cabin, it actually will be in ours.”

He answers like he always does, with a soulful look coming from his chocolate-brown eyes.

Dogwoods along the street are popping spring buds. Daffodils in a cheery shade of yellow seem to wave, defying my mood. I don’t want this, none of it, but I can’t afford to keep the house now.

That's it for this week. Thanks for visiting! I am truly grateful for comments, suggestions, and for you taking the time to read it.

  1. Uh, oh. A UFO in your own backyard? As much as I'd like First Contact, not sure I want it to be so close. This snippet raises more questions--why does she have to sell the place, esp. if it means a lot to her? Guess I'll have to keep reading. :)

  3. Such a contrast - doggy eyes and spring flowers, while she's desperate.

  4. I love the contradiction of the fresh scenery versus the doom of the situation! Great snippet!

  5. Her thoughts about the UFO being in her front yard may turn out to be prophetic. I hope so!

  6. That last sentence made it sound idyllic and I quite envy her - sounds like my type of place - especially with the UFO 'in the backyard'. She's obviously not so keen though - on any of it!

  7. Moving might not be a bad thing, it generally opens up for new adventures.

  8. Not sure I'd be so chipper about the idea of a UFO in my backyard, but it'd certainly be a good adventure. Sounds like she needs one.
