A to Z "Z"

Z is for Ziggy.  No the cartoon character. I mean my daughter, Ziggy. Nope, not her real name (the nurse in the delivery room threatened to take her home if I'd actually named her that).  It is her nickname. Long story how it came to be, but it was assigned in utero--back in the day before we knew the gender before birth.  She didn't look at all like a Ziggy, but it stuck, anyway.

She's goes by more than Ziggy. There's Zigzee, Megan Maroo, Zigoletto, and the Zigmeister. Similarly, her brothers have nicknames too, Natters and  Fuzzy Schmo, among others.

The reason this is on my mind today is because of something my 5 year old granddaughter (who is Nattiecakes) said to me last week. Nattie and I both have puppies. Hers is six weeks older than mine. My little guy is Leo. He is also Leomoemoeway, and he is Schmo-Schmo (along with Stop, No Bite, Bad!) and he recognizes all of them as his name when it's spoken (or in some cases, shouted).

Last Friday, I called Leo "Schmo-Schmo", and Natalie said, "Daisy doesn't have any other names yet."

It got me thinking. How many of us assign nicknames? How many of us have nicknames? What determines if a Megan is also affectionately known as a  Ziggy? Are there some people who don't give nicknames to their children and pets?

And please--share your nickname, and the story of how you got it. :-)

  1. My dad called me Dynamo when I was a kid. I need to ask him why. :)

For some reason, I call my daughter Boo—and sometimes my son, too, which is confusing, to say the least...

Happy Tuesday. Congrats on finishing the A to Z!

    1. Haha! I like "Boo" lol. And yes, it could be confusing.

Sometimes when I have a full house, I just revert to the safe, "Dearie." Everyone becomes dearie.

      Thanks, Dana! :-)

  2. I was given the nickname of Tinkerbell or Tink when I was a young thing. I guess it was because I am under 5’ tall and at the time I only weighed 85 lbs.
Presently I am probably an inch shorter than I was back then, but I am certainly well beyond 85 lbs.
I guess that’s why no one has called me Tink in quite some time. :)
Great meeting you. Congratulations on finishing the A-Z challenge!

    1. What a cute nickname, and a nice story to go along with it. I briefly called my granddaughter, "Tink" when she was a baby, but when she got old enough to be delighted by the concept of patty cake, she became Nattiecakes. :-)

      Thanks for visiting, Lynda! :-)

  3. We're not big on nicknames the reason is my Nana.

I once asked my cousin Patricia why we never called her Patty she told me Nana had a cow named Patty back in Ireland when she was a wee lass.

Well,my name is Jennifer and i was never called Jenny want to take a guess why?

Cause Nana told me she had a cow back in Ireland named Jenny!! LOL Nana was some kind of character. I haven't checked with other cousins but I know she probably conned others as well!!

The name "Jen" for me came when I married Bill ( I was always Jennifer) and my step kids wanted to pick a special name (not Mom because theirs was alive and well) so Jen was born.

Nana was not a happy Irish woman!

I had a cat named Daisy we called her Doodle sometimes...why I can't say :)

Enjoyed meeting you Teresa, lets keep up shall we?

    1. I love this comment. I think you are such a fun person, Jen!

I like that your step kids got to choose their name for you. They are blessed to have such a fun step mom!

And the Nana story--to good. Gotta love those Irish grandmas! :-)

      Yes, let's keep up. :-)

  4. Ziggy must be as cute as her name, I mean when she was a baby.
My name actually is Munir Taj, but I was always called Taj by my parents and siblings. One of my brother- in law's name is also Taj. Therefore in my in laws side I am Munir. In my school and my college I was always Munir - Taj. My husband calls me Munir too. I mean it is my name, not my nick name which is my middle name Taj. I made it complicated did't I?

    1. I know some people, Munir, whose parents have special nicknames for them, but everyone else calls them by their given names. My daughter's husband calls her Megan. :-) Thanks for visiting. :-)

  5. I'm a total nickname-er. All my pets (and husbands) have had nicknames. They're endearments, and I think it's great to use them. Yours are so cute!
    Great post! :-)

  7. My first name is fairly long and I have been correcting people for a life time now. Some people have tried to shorten it every now and again but it has never stuck. I guess I'm not a very nicknamey sort of person.

  8. I suppose the name I'm known by, "Debbie" is technically a nickname, because my real name is Deborah. Only my German aunts ever called me that and also my mother, when she was angry at me. Many people call me "Deb" and I could live without that, but, what can you do? Just another nickname. LOL. Your nicknames for others are all very cute. :-) I've given them to all of my dogs and my clients' dogs. Hubby is "Schatz", which is German for "treasure".

    1. What can you do??? lol, been my experience, not much. They will call you what they will, and it tends to stick.

I think your hubby's nickname is so cute! :-)

  9. <----- Ziggy here. I embrace all my names. They all carry a part of me that someone loves or has loved. BTW, I was a VERY cute baby! Hah.

  10. What an adorable pooch! I love all the nicknames you have for your kids and puppy and grandchild. I called my daughter BenAnna when she was in my belly because those were the names we'd chosen and we didn't know if we were having a boy or a girl. Now I call her Anna Banana and my youngest is Belly Boo. :)

Thanks for the smiles. And congrats on completing a-z. :)
