Weekend Writing Warriors: November 30, 2014

This past week, the writing world lost a wonderful member, and we at wewriwa lost one of our Warriors. Sue Ann Bowling passed away after a long battle with cancer.  A family member announced it in a comment beneath her last blog post. If you'd like to leave a comment of condolence, the post is here: Homecoming Blog
I will surely miss her brilliant Scifi, and her forthrightness when it came to critting my weekly 8 sentence posts. Note* as of this morning, Sue Ann's Weekend Writing Warrior past for this week has appeared on her blog. She wasn't here to sign up for the linky list. She must have had her post scheduled. It's here: Rescue Operation
Weekend Writing Warriors is a weekly bloghop. Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com, then post 8 sentences of their work, published or unpublished, to go live between noon, Saturday and 9:00 AM Sunday EST. Then we visit each other and read, comment, critique, encourage--all those things that do a solitary writer's heart good.
Snippet Sunday group from facebook--not us, but many of our participants do both, can be found HERE
Set up: The MC was vanished without a trace for two years, then returned "without a trace" too. She'd been found in the desert alone after having just given birth. After spending a year being treated for being delusional-- she's convinced that her dreams are actually her missing memories, she's now working with a volunteer counselor, Rayanne.
In today's snippet, Marissa is meeting with , Rayanne. Last week, the reader was looking at prints hanging on the walls of  Rayanne's office--through Marissa's eyes. The last sentence was:
" Her wonderful mood, the skip in her step, all left behind in a shadow made by the sun in an art print.."

She blinked back tears, too embarrassed to let them fall, and then searched Rayanne’s face for any reaction to her self-pity. “I do have the million dollar question, though. I’ll share that with you.”

“Sure, questions, thoughts in general, nothing is barred from our talks.”

“Is there a God?”

Rayanne said without hesitation, “Yes.”

“Why, why then does it seem that some people have perfect lives without doing anything special to deserve them?”
That's it. What works. What doesn't? I'm grateful for every comment you leave. :-)

  2. Why indeed, so many questions and very few answers. Strong snippet.

  3. I suppose the counterpart to Marissa's question is "Why do other people have horrid lives when they've done all they can to deserve so much more?" Thanks for sharing!

  4. Heh, that's a question I have myself :-) Readers are bound to connect with Marissa on a lot of levels. I can see improvement as you go along, Reesie. Definitely looking forward to the completed book.

  8. I can see how your MC would have questions concerning the fairness of the cosmos. Great dialogue that rang true. (Thank you for sharing the news about Sue Ann.)

  10. That is the million dollar question. I'm glad Rayanne didn't hesitate to answer it. Strong faith can work wonders. So sorry to hear about Sue Ann, but thank you for telling us.

  11. The dialog to come, after the final question today, will be very interesting. I really like your heroine and worry about her - excellent excerpt! (Thanks for letting us know about SueAnn. I'd been quite worried about her, checked her blog last week for news...was hoping maybe things were at least going ok. I'll really miss her. Left a comment over there as well.)

    1. Thanks, Veronica. I feel like I'm writing this blind. A complete rewrite of a book I wrote 9 years ago. ~sigh~ A promise to my mom before she died...

I checked Sue Ann's blog, too. She'd asked about Beta readers, and when I didn't hear from her, I was worried too. Such a loss...

  13. Fair question, Teresa . . . though it also speaks to her state of mind.

(speaking of states of mind, the loss of Sue Ann is such a blow---she will certainly be missed)

  14. So poignant, so often I've heard that question from those who felt battered down. It's a question none of us can answer with the certainty that someone in such despair needs. Great 8.

Thank you for sharing the news about Sue Ann, I'll miss her helpful honesty and support.

  16. Hi, I just wrote a long response and it was lost. I'm so devestated to hear the news about Sue Ann. I was just wondering about her. Please give her family my best and let them know she is in my prayers. What an amazing snippet, so fitting for the news also. I can't wait to see how she responds, I know you'll think up something fantastic. Sorry for the late response also, I was stuck in Chicago this weekend because the oilpan in my car was crushed in a pothole and I had to get it replaced. :( It can only get better!

  17. Great snippet, Teresa! I'm surprised that after all she's been through Rayanne answers with such conviction.

  18. Who hasn't had that kind of question, no matter if you do happen to believe in the Divine?

Very sorry to hear about Sue Ann's passing. She was such a valuable member of the writing blogosphere for so long.
