This snippet is from Emmily, Unbound, an SFR story. To read a compilation of all snippets posted for this story, click Here: Emmily Unbound, Chapters 1 & 2 Emmily, the main character, has lost pretty much everything in the last twelve months: her marriage, her parents, her job, and her house. She and her dog, Murphy, have moved to the mountains of Pennsylvania into an old, remote, hunting camp her parents willed to her. On her first day there, along a desolate road she's been forced at gunpoint to haul a wounded man to her house. She's doubting what she's seeing.

Last week ended with this: Yeah. Right, Emmily. Bigfoot will wander into the yard, next.
Now, the snippet:
They're lifting the guy out of the car and he's shouting, his verbal assault halting when his breath hitches. Sounds like he’s ordering them around. Shouldn’t he be thanking them?
I’ve seen gratitude come in odd forms, but I don’t think this will be a new one added to my list.
I remind myself that if I were the one in pain—injured in a car crash like him—I’d be bitchy too.
I unlock the door and we go inside. The house is still reasonably warm though the fire no longer burns. Kade tromps ahead of us, peering into rooms. Much to my displeasure, he motions them into mom and dad’s bedroom—now mine. I step into the doorway and watch them gently lay him, bloody blanket and all, onto the bed.
That's the snippet. A few more lines if you're interested. :-)
I’m not sure what to do. Have I helped enough? Maybe they only needed me to get them inside the house. Nah. Doubtful. They could have kicked in the door.
Kade removes a box from his backpack. Looks metal. The lid bears a star, in the middle of which is a figure eight on its side. I’ve never seen that design before and have no idea what organization it belongs to. Yegads…could be a terrorist group. He opens it and is examining its contents. Tiny things. They’re inside a sealed, clear package.
I remember--in a numb sort of way--that there are groceries in the car. Autopilot kicks in and I turn to go back out the door, but Kade’s hand gripping my arm stops me. “I need help.”
Oh boy. Sounds like nothing about this is going to be easy.
The working blurb for this story follows: Tagline:
Sometimes the simplest plan doesn’t turn out so simple...
After
losing everything that bound her to her ordinary and happy life, Emmily
has one plan: move to the mountains. Oh, and never give her heart away
again.
But
everything goes sideways when a UFO crash-lands on the ridge next to
hers, and on a desolate road she’s waylaid by men demanding help for
their injured ‘General’. He’s confused, bleeding, and sweet Lord, good
looking—even while sneering and growling at her.
Fleeing
an ambush meant to kill him, Gen Rael is gravely injured when his ship
crashes on Earth. The human woman his crew captures to aid them is a
confounding mixture of terrified, defiant, and beautiful. A female
distraction is the last thing his hindered mission can afford. But this
Emmily woman is cutting through the steel wall he keeps around his
heart.
Despite
being their hostage, Emmily isn’t blind to the peril they’re in:
there’s a threat coming from the stars, and it’s lethal to all of them,
including her.
And her simple plan to never-ever fall in love again? Looks like that’s in peril too…
That's it for this week. Thank you so much for visiting and for reading. :-)
She might want to start being grateful she's necessary rather than an inconvenience . . . Just saying.
ReplyDeleteIndeed! She does have that conversation with herself. :-) Thanks, Nancy!
DeleteSo, he needs help. I'm curious as to why he specifically needs her help at this point. Sounds like it's more than access to shelter.
ReplyDeleteRight now it's food, medical supplies, and shelter while Genrael recovers. Thanks for visiting, Ian!.
DeleteAlways interesting new developments going on while Emmily's mind runs on its own track...enjoyed the snippet.
ReplyDeleteShe's grasping at all kinds of things right now. Thanks, Jean!
DeleteAlien space captains make the worst patients. Love how she's trying to process and rationalize everything.
ReplyDeleteLolol! They do! Thanks, Alexis. :-)
DeleteI guess the groceries are going to have to wait. She seems to be sorting through everything in her mind to keep calm. I don't know if I could do that so well. Great snippet!
ReplyDeleteI think she's in shock, and sort of on autopilot. :-) Thanks for visiting, Jess!
DeleteI hope she continues to be useful to them. Because as soon as you're not, bad things happen to you.I wonder why the other guys can't help? Great snippet!
ReplyDeletePart of it is that he's keeping an eye on her. She will have a conversation with herself about staying useful to them. :-) Thanks, Jenna!
DeleteI don't suppose she'll just tell him she's going out for the groceries. I wonder what kind of help he thinks she can give him.
ReplyDeleteHaha! She tries.
DeleteThe immediate need is shelter and medical care, and food is a coming-soon need.
Thanks, Ed!
Does he really need her help, or is her afraid to let her out of his sight? it could go either way.
ReplyDeleteMaybe a bit more safe at home on her turf.
ReplyDeleteWell, that would be thoroughly awful! Having an accident victim brought in and set on your bed on a bloody blanket is pretty much the epitome of a bad day.
ReplyDeleteI worked in the medical field for a number of years. Blood loss, head trauma, electrolyte imbalance, and of course good old altered mental status from substances or a psychiatric condition are all reasons why a patient might not be grateful for help rendered.
I'm wondering why they need her help. Can't wait to find out.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what he'll say if she tells him to wait while she brings in groceries. Great snippet.
ReplyDeleteI don't think my anxiety can handle this. Between the bloody man ruining my bed sheets, the milk going bad in the car and being forced to play nurse, I dunno know how she's going to keep it together. Great Snippet, I love how her mind works.
