This snippet is from Emmily, Unbound, an SFR story. She and her dog, Murphy, have moved to the mountains of Pennsylvania into an old, remote, hunting camp her parents willed to her. On her first day there, along a desolate road she's forced at gunpoint to haul a wounded man and his 'crew' to her house. A tad over three weeks since the abduction has gone by. She's making supply run number two. Adren, the alien who appears youngest, has gone with her to make sure she doesn't contact authorities

The Snippet:

As I drive down the lane with Adren in the passenger seat, I ponder how much has changed in the short time they’ve been here, a little under a month. My mind goes back to the conversation we had. I feel good, lifted by the camaraderie, but it’s a false good and I’m keenly aware of that. They might kill me. I still need to get away.

My blood pressure must be as high as the clouds. No, as high as the stars that these guys probably call home. I have to call my doctor and get my prescription transferred up here. How do I do that with my confiscated cellphone?

I never had a hypertension problem until Jason started slinking around with his little, pet, secretary, Georgianna.

A little more, if you wish to read on.

I didn’t even try to compete.  Fifteen years younger than me. What would've been the use?

Maybe he always had one foot out the door…

Anyway, all those years of perfect blood pressure didn’t matter once my anxiety level climbed high, waiting for it to happen, for him say the words. And he did. “I want a divorce.”

Why, I think bitterly, are men like Jason so cowardly at such times? Why do they stop at the word divorce? Can’t bring themselves to say the rest?  Just say it. Complete the devastation they’re causing. ‘I cheated on you and now I’m in love with her. I want to divorce you and marry her. Her body is not traitorous and will produce babies for me. She works a real job with a steady salary—even though I pay it—instead of puttering around, writing books that don’t sell enough to buy groceries.’

My knuckles are white, gripping the steering wheel.

     Breathe in, breathe out…

That's it for this week. Thank you so much for visiting and for reading. :-)

The working blurb for this story:

After losing everything that bound her to her ordinary and happy life, Emmily has one plan: move to the mountains and never-ever give her heart away again. But everything goes sideways when a UFO crash-lands nearby, and on a desolate road, she’s waylaid by men demanding help for their injured ‘General’. He’s confused, bleeding, and sweet Lord, good looking—even while sneering and growling at her.

Fleeing an ambush meant to kill him, Gen Rael is gravely injured when his ship crashes on Earth. The human woman his crew captures to aid them is a confounding mixture of terrified, defiant, and captivating. A female distraction is the last thing his hindered mission can afford. But this Emmily woman is cutting through the steel wall he keeps around his heart.

Despite being their hostage, Emmily isn’t blind to the peril they’re in: there’s a threat coming from the stars, and it’s lethal to all of them, including her.
And her simple plan to never-ever fall in love again? Looks like that’s in peril too…

  1. Yes. This is real from her heart, anger mixed with grief and pain. "And her simple plan to never-ever fall in love again?" I hope her life gives her that joy.

    1. It is a HFN with potential for HEA. :-) It will have a sequel to wrap up things.

She has a lot of emotions tangled up inside. A new love might be a complication to sorting them all out. Or not. lol

      Thanks for visiting, Meg!

    1. Silver lining is coming, but she's has to get through a lot of dark cloud to find it. :-) Thanks for visiting Sue. :-)

    1. Agreed. There are no answers. I think evolutionary psychology is at play for many of them. Thanks, Ashley!

  6. Her passenger was able to read her emotions last time. I wonder if he will be able to this time as well, especially since they've spend even more time together. I definitely felt the emotions from that snippet!

  7. All that going on in her life and then she's abducted by aliens? She'd better get that prescription transferred!

  8. Calm down Emmily - you might crash - very awkward with an alien on board.

  9. You really build sympathy for her in this scene but also admiration because she's on her own and may have just met a new . . . male?

  10. Oh my, so much pain. She's doing a number on herself too. Well, hopefully the aliens can give her new things to think about. I want your Emmily to be happy! Great snippet though, really felt as if I knew her.

  13. Hers sounds like a wretched existence before the cabin. Perhaps she needs to give these guys the benefit of the doubt. Sounds like they can't be worse than her ex. Great snippet!

  14. Poor thing. She's better off without him, but that's hard to remember after he betrayed her so terribly.

  15. This is the deepest and best insight we've had into her personal troubles. Good job.

  16. What a deep experience Emily is going through. I pray it isn't based on real life. I know our best writing is often taken from real life experiences. It is for me, at least.

    1. Hi Jeff. Agreed. The best is what we pull from our own reactions to our life's experiences. :-) Thanks for visiting!

  17. Ouch! I suppose it would've been worse had he actually said those words instead of implying them. Still, way to slap a girl when she's already down.
