This snippet is from Emmily, Unbound, an SFR story. Emmily is on a supply run, and Adren (the youngest looking alien) is with her this time. General has once again kept Murphy at the cabin under threat of harm if Emmily tries to get away.

I've skipped ahead a bit. Emmily is telling Adren the cover story she's come up with in case something happens.

The Snippet:

“You are my nephew, my nonexistent brother’s son.”

I pause, reminding myself that these guys haven’t yet begun to grasp truth and lies in exaggeration, let alone the slant on it that sarcasm adds. I add, “Hey, seriously, nephew, son of my brother, I am a writer, and you’re visiting me for an extended time. Okay?”

He nods but I’m sure there are still a lot of gaps in his comprehension of what I’ve just said.

As I unbuckle my seat belt, he says, “Hey Aunt Emmily, do not attempt escape or try to warn anyone we are staying with you. General has commanded me to return you to your home, to us, no matter the cost. I am not to injure you, short of restraining you for the trip back to your home. However, I have been ordered to pursue a harsh type of persuasion. I am permitted to harm bystanders in order to maintain your compliance.”

That's it for this week.  I bet she doesn't react well to this. :-) Thank you so much for visiting and for reading. :-)

This snippet is from Emmily, Unbound, an SFR story. Emmily is on a supply run, and Adren is with her this time.

Last week's snippet ended with:

My heart feels like it’s skipping beats when I picture General’s body. Yeah. My brain went there. Straight to there.

     Stop it, Emmily. Just stop…

The Snippet:

I get my head back on track, back to the task-at-hand, getting through this grocery run without incident. What can go wrong with this shopping trip?

I look over Adren one more time. That boy is a junior stud. His hair is pulled up into a top knot and tucked inside one of my dad’s old Pittsburgh Pirates ball caps. He has a Penguins tee-shirt on. If I could’ve found different pants that fit him, he wouldn’t be wearing his stained uniform trousers.

Still, the flawless angles remain: the aquiline nose, his chin and jawline… not too much, not too little, perfect even for Goldilocks. All that on top of a six-foot two frame. I sigh.

Read on to finish the scene:

He'll be memorable to most who see him, but not in a way that will mark him as not being from around here, and I mean really not from around here.

That's it for this week. Thank you so much for visiting and for reading. :-)

This snippet is from Emmily, Unbound, an SFR story. Emmily is on a supply run, and Adren is with her this time.

Last week's snippet ended with:

I gulp down rising fear. They’re not toys. And he’s not human. Just like the rest of them.

I, Emmily Wagner, have made first contact with outer-space aliens.

The Snippet:

I continue driving while I try to move my thoughts forward, but I can’t. Aliens. Jesus… aliens… I don’t want to believe it. It’s safer in my ignorance born of denial.

But now that I’ve finally admitted it to myself—what I’ve pretty much known since the get-go—I analyze why it took me so long to arrive at this place.

I think I deserve a pass here. It was fair enough to deny it early on. Like it wasn’t bad enough to try accepting that plain-old, human criminals carjacked me right into a hostage situation. I might have flipped my lid if I’d allowed my brain to go there, to believe they were extraterrestrials.

Back then I didn’t know them, well, not like I do now. At least enough to realize they’re pretty much like us.

Read on to finish the scene:

I bet we’re compatible in most ways. The important ones, anyhow.

My heart feels like it’s skipping beats when I picture General’s body. Yeah. My brain went there. Straight to there.

     Stop it, Emmily. Just stop…

That's it for this week. Thank you so much for visiting and for reading. :-)
