WeWriWa: EU57

Hello fellow warriors. :-) I made it back. I missed you all! My 40+ sucked the life out of me the last two weeks. I am so happy to be in front of a keyboard--and my imagination is allowed to guide my hands, not Bio problem solving.

I hope your Christmas was a good one in spite of challenges posed by Covid.

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors. If you'd like to participate or read tempting morsels from other authors, please sign up--or check the linky list at: http://wewriwa.blogspot.com/

Also, check out the Snippet Sunday group on facebook.

This snippet is from Emmily, Unbound, an SFR story.
Emmily, the main character, has lost pretty much everything in the last twelve months: her marriage, her parents, her job, and her house. She and
her dog, Murphy, have moved to the mountains of Pennsylvania into an old, remote, hunting camp her parents willed to her. On her first day there, along a desolate road she's been forced at gunpoint to haul a wounded man and his 'crew' to her house.

This week, I'm skipping ahead a few chapters.  Emmily is making a supply run. Kade has accompanied her to make sure she stays in line and doesn't contact authorities. They've just finished shopping for groceries.

Last week ended with this:

It feels like it takes forever to get it all organized in the SUV. Then Kade says, “I have a list from Genrael.”

Now, the  snippet:

When he shows it to me, I tell him he has to read it since I have no idea what those symbols mean. I don’t think they’re Chinese or Mideastern. No matter. The way I see it, he’s in charge of shopping for Mr. D.H. He reads the list out loud.

Something is vaguely familiar about the items he needs. I bet the big box home improvement store will have the stump remover and the Sulphur .

I'm right, but they don’t sell activated charcoal. I say, “I have no idea where to get it, Kade.”

His expression tells me he’s clueless.

“Genrael said, after his research,it might be the most difficult of the three to procure.” He reaches into his pocket and produces my cellphone.

A few more lines if you wish to read on:

“You are permitted to use this to discover where to purchase the charcoal. In direct sight of my eyes, though. I am to observe, to assure you do not make contact with anyone on the…outside.”

“Seriously?” My volume is climbing. “Seriously!”

     “Yes, Emmily. Seriously.”

He’s not catching the sarcastic bite I’m throwing into sheer disbelief.

      What’s the use

Now what do you suppose Genrael wants those items for?

The working blurb for this story follows:

After losing everything that bound her to her ordinary and happy life, Emmily has one plan: move to the mountains. Oh, and never give her heart away again.
But everything goes sideways when a UFO crash-lands on the next ridge over, and on a desolate road she’s waylaid by men demanding help for their injured ‘General’. He’s confused, bleeding, and sweet Lord, good looking—even while sneering and growling at her.
Fleeing an ambush meant to kill him, Gen Rael is gravely injured when his ship crashes on Earth. The human woman his crew captures to aid them is a confounding mixture of terrified, defiant, and beautiful. A female distraction is the last thing his hindered mission can afford. But this Emmily woman is cutting through the steel wall he keeps around his heart.
Despite being their hostage, Emmily isn’t blind to the peril they’re in: there’s a threat coming from the stars, and it’s lethal to all of them, including her.
And her simple plan to never-ever fall in love again? Looks like that’s in peril too…

That's it for this week. Thank you so much for visiting and for reading. :-)

  3. I like her reaction here, but then again she's being held captive. What else would she expect?

  4. That's an interesting list! I have no idea what those items would be needed for, but am definitely curious.

  5. Ummm, there are three drugstores within 5 miles of me that sell activated charcoal including CVS and Walgreen's so....but yes, I do wonder what he needs tham all for and it's a very fascinating list! Great snippet, glad you got through that crunch time at the day job!

  6. I keep waiting for Stockholm Syndrome to kick in. I'd sort of expected before now, actually.

  7. I love how something is tickling her memory. The pieces are starting to fall into place. Great snippet.

  8. Not sure what the stump remover and sulphur are for (I've used sulphur to treat chigger bites myself), but activated charcoal is used medically to treat poisoning. I wonder if Genrael has been poisoned? Intriguing snippet!

  9. Sarcasm isn't for the benefit of the person it's being used on (the sarcasee?) but for the person using it (the sarcaser) to feel better. I realized this when working with elementary students who probably had about the same comprehension level as your aliens. :D

  10. That would certainly be frustrating. I hate having people look over my shoulder when I'm trying to work. It makes me nervous and more likely to make mistakes.
