This snippet is from Emmily, Unbound, an SFR story. She and her dog, Murphy, have moved to the mountains of Pennsylvania into an old, remote, hunting camp her parents willed to her. On her first day there, along a desolate road she's been forced at gunpoint to haul a wounded man and his 'crew' to her house.A week since the abduction has gone by. She's making a supply run. Kade--one of the aliens--has gone with her to make sure she doesn't contact authorities to alert them to alien presence.Last week ended with them arguing over what she wants to buy at a sporting goods store.

     The snippet ended with:
He reaches to the ignition and grabs the keys before I start the car. “Emmily, I must know where you are going and what you need to buy. Tell me, please. You have no choice.”

        We continue from there:

“Please? But I have no choice? How is that even... That's not how it works, Kade.”

“What do you want to buy?”

I blurt, “A baseball bat. Happy now?”

He cocks his head then narrows his eyes. “Are we going to play… baseball?”

“Nope.”

“Then why do you need a baseball…bat?”

A few more lines if you wish to read on:

I’m done. I sit in silence. Make that sulky silence.

“Emmily, I would like to allow you to purchase the baseball bat, but I do not understand the reason for it. Sporting goods stores are where you purchase weapons, correct? Guns?”

Curse that smirk that spreads across my face.

He shakes his head. “Are you lying to me about a baseball bat? Do you plan to purchase a gun to use…against me on the way home?”

Emmily isn't really planning on buying a gun, right?

The working blurb for this story:

After losing everything that bound her to her ordinary and happy life, Emmily has one plan: move to the mountains and never-ever give her heart away again.

But everything goes sideways when a UFO crash-lands nearby, and on a desolate road she’s waylaid by men demanding help for their injured ‘General’. He’s confused, bleeding, and sweet Lord, good looking—even while sneering and growling at her.

Fleeing an ambush meant to kill him, Gen Rael is gravely injured when his ship crashes on Earth. The human woman his crew captures to aid them is a confounding mixture of terrified, defiant, and captivating. A female distraction is the last thing his hindered mission can afford. But this Emmily woman is cutting through the steel wall he keeps around his heart.
Despite being their hostage, Emmily isn’t blind to the peril they’re in: there’s a threat coming from the stars, and it’s lethal to all of them, including her.
And her simple plan to never-ever fall in love again? Looks like that’s in peril too…

That's it for this week. Thank you so much for visiting and for reading. :-)

  1. If Kade suspects her of wanting to kill him, her situation has just gotten much more dangerous. Be careful, Emmily!

    1. It has, but there have already been hints dropped that these guys need her, and they really don't want to hurt her anyway. Their gripe isn't with Earth or with her, it's with someone they're making references to--the "three minute man". Thanks for visiting, Ed!

  2. Emmily is in a precarious position. She can either bond with her captor or plot and execute an escape. Very interesting story. I'm caught.

  3. Either he's perceptive or paranoid. Or perhaps both. Intriguing.

  4. He's finally catching on and that means trouble for Emmily.

  5. Poor Emmily. Kade is figuring out her plans too easily. She needs to be more careful.

  6. Definitely curious how Emmily will answer this, and whether she'll get into the store. Waiting for next weekend....

  7. For not being residents of our lovely blue planet, Kade has a lot figured out already. Emmily might have more than she can handle. As if a pending galactic disaster doesn't count *cheeky grin*

  8. Maybe she should offer to teach them baseball!

  9. I'm surprised he's even contemplating allowing her to buy the bat! What use does she have for it other than as a weapon?

  10. Emmily doesn't seem like the 'shoot her way out' type, so I wonder what she's up to? This snippet really ratchets up the tension between them.

  11. Great ramping up off the conflict, creating a place where they have to figure out another way, or face the consequences. Good.

  12. Interesting snippet. I'm amazed at her patience. I know what I'd like to do with the baseball...bat.

  13. Now I want to know if she really wants a gun. I don't think she does.

  14. I'm always amazed at how forthright she is with these guys. Although I guess she might be lying bout the baseball bat...Can't wait to see where this goes next week!

  15. I'm curious to know what she really is going to buy.

  16. I'd be more worried about them overpowering her and using the gun against her. She should try to poison their food instead. :)
