Weekend Writing Warriors April 24, 2016

Hello all my fellow Warriors (and Snippeteers)! :-)

Weekend Writing Warriors is a weekly bloghop.  Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com, then post 8 to 10 sentences of their work, published or unpublished, on their own blog to go live between noon, Saturday, and 9:00 AM Sunday EST. Then we visit each other and read, comment, critique, encourage--all those things that do a solitary writer's heart good.
Snippet Sunday group from facebook--not us, but many of our participants do both, can be found HERE

Setup:  Earth has been invaded by aliens. Our MC, Lily, and her dog, Jobe, were captured.
Lily is on the ground with her wrists and ankles secured. It is dawn, and the alien commander and Lily just locked eyes. She demanded to know why.Last week's snippet ended with this:

"One scaly eyebrow went up, and his smile faded. “Your kind does not take pleasure in business?”
We continue from there:

“I’m done talking to you.”

His deep sigh of impatience was so human-like it sent shudders through her. “Talk to me,” he demanded.
She looked toward the sunrise and remained silent, feigning indifference.

“Talk to me. Beg me for your dog’s life.”

She spun around and leveled her eyes at him. Her anger, only just ignited, raged through her like an inferno. “Why would you spare my dog’s life? And while I’m at it, why would you spare mine?”

That's it. I am so sorry I didn't get around to everyone who so kindly left comments on my post last week. Life became unexpectedly hectic. I will do better this week. :-)

Have a great week!

  2. Interesting. It starts to sound like he needs something from her, else why be so insistent?

  3. Isn't he a clever one to mention the one thing that would bring her attention back to him. Nicely done. :)

  4. Yes, I want to know why he hasn't ended her life and her little dog too. What oh what could be the answer. I'm enjoying the story. :)

  5. What used to look hopeless now has a ray of hope for her survival -- and, more importantly, the dog's. ;-)

    1. I am learning a lot from these snippets--that people will root for a dog earlier and longer than they'll root for a human lol Thanks, Elizabeth!

  11. Nice to see her standing up the alien, but I have a feeling he hasn't kept them alive out of any noble purpose...this has been fantastic, Teresa!

  13. I love her spunk, and I can totally understand it. If you're sure you're going to die, why not at least do it with dignity? As for the dog, you know what they say--everybody else can die but the dog BETTER make it! ;-) Great snippet!

  14. She's got a point. And if he does kill the dog, then he's got nothing to bargain with if he wants her to do something. Still, it takes guts to play that game when your opponent is holding all the cards. Great scene!

  15. She's tough but she's fighting for her life.
    The scene is impressive.

  19. Really enjoying this story, as I do all of your writing. Fascinating the alien wants her to argue and beg for the dog's life. Hmmm. Terrific snippet!

  20. A great, tension-filled exchange! Now it's her turn to raise the good points...why would he spare either of them?

  21. Hard to be scared and not know exactly how scared you should be. Threatening her dog tells me he's not one of the good guys. :)

  22. I like that her anger has been ignited and that she is fighting back. I think she's right about the dog. He knows that if he kills it then he has lost leverage. Good piece.

  23. The threat of the silent treatment worked remarkably well. Too bad she couldn't hold to that threat!
