Weekend Writing Warriors October 28, 2018

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

Happy end of October! And if you celebrate it, I hope you have a fabulous Halloween.
It's time for snips and bits of amazing tales by talented writers! Weekend Writing Warriors is a weekly bloghop. Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com, then post 8 to 10 sentences of their work, published or unpublished, on their own blog to go live by 9:00 AM Sunday, EST. Then we visit each other and read, comment, critique, encourage--all those things that do a solitary writer's heart good.
Snippet Sunday group from facebook--not us, but many of our participants do both, can be found HERE
This week's snippet is from "The Sands of Dhor".  Lily, abducted from Earth by alien slavers, is with Theusand--who seems to have rescued her from the slavers. His race can communicate mind to mind.  Creative punctuation ahead.  Last week's snippet ended with:
"
When his arms came around her and pulled her close, she leaned back against him."
This week's snippet continues from there:

A little voice in the back of her mind, the voice of human reason, told her to tell him to stop, to go away, but she was weak.
His voice purred, "Tomorrow we will dock at a waystation then you and I will visit the near world. There we will enjoy the comfort of things not available on a ship or a station."
When she answered, even to her own ears, she sounded like she was coming onto him. "Things like what, Theusand?"
He leaned close, his breath warm in her ear as he whispered, "Fresh food, soap, water--lots and lots of water. A sweet drink that relaxes the mind, and a large, soft bed."
She was responding to the word "bed" rolling off his tongue. She should stop it, but her mind was someplace it had never been. God forgiver her; she liked it there.

That's it for this week.  All opinions greatly appreciated. :-) Thank you so much for visiting and for commenting!

This week's snippet is from "The Sands of Dhor".  Lily, abducted from Earth by alien slavers, is in a room on the ship with a portal she can see the outside through. She's recalling Earth's alien invasion. *She is with Theusand--he is the man with clawed hands.  Last week's snippet ended with:
"
Thinking of Ben trying to stop her from crying was causing a new wave of sobs."
This week's snippet continues from there:

Uninvited and unwanted, he stepped into her head, and like a magic wand had been waved, her sobbing stopped.  He was doing it after all, shutting off her tears and she had no say in it.  She tried to fight it, but her words came out minus any conviction she'd felt just seconds before. "Leave me alone."
"Never, my Earth Lily. I will leave you alone never."
The fight in her died, replaced with utter exhaustion. Warmth spread through her. Just like her fury at his intrusion, her will was nowhere to be found.  When his arms came around her and pulled her close, she leaned back against him.

Uh oh. Where is this going? That's it for this week.  All opinions greatly appreciated. :-) Thank you so much for visiting and for commenting!

Clawed hands came from behind to rest on her shoulders."
This week's snippet continues from there:

She swiped at her tears, as if she could hide that she’d been crying…again. At least he had the decency not to attempt consoling her by doing the man thing—trying to fix everything so the tears would stop.
One of those bordering on hysteria snickers escaped her. Unbelievable. It took an alien  somewhere out in the boondocks of space to understand the way her human emotions worked. Sometimes women just needed to cry. Why couldn’t human men understand that?
Ben always did it too, as if he felt the world was off-kilter unless she was happy.
The twisted reality of the moment hit her. Thinking of Ben trying to stop her from crying was causing a new wave of sobs.

And that had to be done not by soldiers, but by housewives and teachers, mill workers, grocery store clerks...moms, dads, and grandparents, fighting for our lives."
This week's snippet continues from there:

Even if we’d found a reliable way to make kill shots through their armor, that helix weapon they used was unbeatable. It was some kind of directed energy, and nothing, nothing at all could defend against it.

Tears ran down her face. Maybe if we’d gone nuclear on them? But we’d waited, fearing detonation on our own soil. Then we’d waited until it was too late, and instead of self-destruction, they destroyed us.

Behind Lily, the door opened. She didn’t turn to see who it was. It could have been any of the Chays or the Sand. Thoughts were silent.  Clawed hands came from behind, resting on her shoulders.

This week's snippet is from "The Sands of Dhor".  Lily, abducted from Earth by alien slavers, is in a room on the ship with a portal she can see the outside through. She'srecalling an astronomy class she'd taken, and how young and idealistic she and her classmates had been, how they would have welcomed E.T.s with open arms.
This week's snippet continues from there:

Then their teacher had shared an essay by a well-respected scientist. In it, the author posited that when we’d launched our little welcome wagon, the Golden Record, out into space, we’d essentially sent an invitation to be conquered. We’d notified any aggressive cultures that we were weak, naïve, and incapable of self-defense. We were ripe for the harvest—whatever they wished to take from us, including ourselves.
God, he’d been right.  Why hadn’t the powers in charge realized that?
Once they were on our doorstep--orbiting Earth, no human weapon could have stopped the bulragers, save for the nuclear option--something utterly devastating to our planet.
But when the invaders reached the ground, there’d been a better chance defending with smaller arms. Still, they had to be hit in the right spot. And that had to be done not by soldiers, but by housewives and teachers, mill workers, grocery store clerks...moms, dads, and grandparents, fighting for our lives.
