Weekend Writing Warriors: Sporulators 4

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, where we share snips and bits of amazing tales by talented authors and writers. Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com then post 8 to 10 sentences of their work, published or unpublished (we like it all) on their own blog to go live by 9:00 AM each Sunday. Then we visit each other and read and comment, critique, encourage--all those things that do a solitary writer's heart good.
Snippet Sunday group from facebook, not us, but many of our participants do both, is HERE

This week's snippet is from a short story, 'Sporulators', more dystopian/scifi, than anything I've written to date. It falls nowhere in a romance genre. Shocking, huh?   ( <--Tongue-in-cheek-sort-of).

Last week's excerpt ended with this:

"The future of human food rests on its success. And you are aware that its design is self-supporting, right?”.

This is in Eastwold's POV.

The snippet:

The last hadn’t really been a question. It was a condescending dig.  Eastwold shook his head. He had to be the better man here, the professional, since Klars appeared to be incapable. “I’ve heard such, that  DESA isn’t worried.  But since you stuck your poster child for these projects out in this lonely corner of the stars, it might be a good time to remind you that space has pretty much incalculable risks.”
Klars smiled at him—a stiff, businesslike  smile. “Incalculable? Really, Eastwold?
That's it for this week. Thanks for visiting! I am truly grateful for comments, suggestions, and for you taking the time to read it.

  1. Trouble afoot? Klars is being snippy. I sense a major problem about to happen. I do love when that happens.

  2. I wonder what it will take to get Klars to go down there. Eastwold is definitely trying everything possible to change his mind. Enjoying these snippets!

    1. Klars is snooty. Eastwold has a dark side, too. ;-)

  4. I guess "incalculable" sounds like a challenge to science nerd like Klars. I'm guessing he'll be regretting his snootiness soon.

  5. Is the design self-aware as well as self-supporting?

    1. Interesting thought, Aurora, but there's no AI involved, nor planetary sentience. :-)

    1. Nope. Not at all. But soon they'll have to set aside their animosity.

  8. I'm surprised Klars has survived on a spaceship without being shoved out the nearest airlock! He really has an insufferable attitude!

    1. Haha! Perhaps Eastwold has thought about it. But Eastwold has a rep to live up to. Leave no man behind... Thanks, Ian!

  10. What does Klars know (or think he knows) that Eastwold doesn't? This is a nice way to tease us and make us wonder.

    1. Astute observation, Ed. Klars knows lots that he's not saying.

  11. Don't you just want to smack the smug off of him? I know I do.

  12. Haha! Yes. SO does Eastwold. It was all I could to keep that character in line. ;-)
