WeWriWa: EU 44

Happy September. Can you believe it?
First, thank you to everyone for all of the wonderful--and oh-so-very-helpful comments and emails about writing my blurb.

Now...Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors. Thank you to everyone who left a comment last week. If you'd like to participate or read tempting morsels from other authors, please sign up--or check the linky list at: http://wewriwa.blogspot.com/

Also, check out the Snippet Sunday group on facebook.
This snippet is from Emmily, Unbound, an SFR story.
To read a compilation of all snippets posted for this story, click Here: Emmily Unbound, Chapters 1 & 2  Emmily, the main character, has lost pretty much everything in the last twelve months: her marriage, her parents, her job, and her house. She and her dog, Murphy, have moved to the mountains of Pennsylvania into an old, remote, hunting camp her parents willed to her. On her first day there, along a desolate road she's been forced at gunpoint to haul a wounded man to her house.:

Now, the  snippet:

Kade rides in the passenger seat with Murph on his lap. The others trot alongside us, having no problem keeping pace as we drive up the steep incline.
Why-oh-why is it comforting to see Kade rub behind my dog’s ears? And Murphy is lapping it up. He didn’t even bark at them while the carjacking was taking place. Wait, is it a carjacking or kidnapping? The crimes going on today have me completely confused. Whatever it is, I pray that Murphy and I get out of it alive.
I count as I breathe deep, filling my lungs with much needed air. I exhale as I count to four, pause for two, then inhale again..

That's the snippet. A few more lines if you're interested. :-)

Awe hell. I can’t do it. I’m going to pass out. Nothing will stop my hyperventilating.

The working blurb for this story follows:

Sometimes the simplest plan isn’t simple at all…

After losing everything  that bound her to her ordinary and happy life, Emmily has one plan: move to the mountains, and never-ever fall in love again. But, everything goes sideways when a UFO crash-lands on the ridge next to hers, and on a desolate road, she’s waylaid by men demanding help for their injured ‘General’.  He’s confused, bleeding, and sweet Lord, good looking—even while he sneers and growls at her.

Fleeing an ambush meant to kill him, Gen Rael is gravely injured when his ship crashes on Earth. The human his crew captures to aid them is a confounding mixture of terrified, defiant, and beautiful. The last thing he wants is a mate--especially a human one. But she’s cutting through the steel wall he keeps around his heart.

Despite being their hostage, Emmily isn’t blind to the peril they’re in. There’s a threat coming and it’s lethal to all of them, including her.

And about her plan to never fall in love again? Looks like that’s in peril, too…

        That's it for this week.

  1. Passing out is not going to help her at all. But if Murphy is not upset with what is going on, she shouldn't be so worried. Dogs know more than we do when it comes to danger. Well, most of the time. Great snippet, and the blurb is fabulous!

  2. Yes, I don't think she should be quite so worried. Dogs can sense things, so if Murphy isn't alarmed and barking his head off, she's probably ok for now. I hope she doesn't pass out. That will probably tick the kidnappers off a lot. Great snippet!

  3. Could be a good sign that the dog isn't worried about their new passenger.

  4. Dogs know when there's a threat. She needs to chill before she has an accident.

  5. Nice contrast - she's hyperventilating and the dog is chill. Hopefully the dog has sensed the situation.

  6. Maybe she can channel Murphey's calm energy. Hope she doesn't crash the car!

  7. Drama ahead if she's going to pass out at the wheel! Enjoyed the snippet...

  8. If her dog is okay with their new friend, hopefully she can use that reassurance to calm down before she crashes the car or makes a fool of herself.

  9. Hyperventilating may not be helpful, but it's totally understandable -- as is getting a bit of comfort from seeing her contented dog being petted by a 'kidnapper.'

  10. Dogs usually have a good sense about people. If Murphy were growling, it would be more worrisome, I think

  11. Interesting conflict between Murphy's reactions and her own.

  12. Her dog knows best, it would seem. lol Great snippet.

  13. I guess she's thinking if the dog likes him she might be safe. But she has been kidnapped so her fear is justified.

  14. I agree with many others. If she is so close with Murphy, then his sense of clam should comfort her on some level.
