This snippet is from Emmily, Unbound, an SFR story.
To read a compilation of all snippets posted for this story, click Here: Emmily Unbound, Chapters 1 & 2  Emmily, the main character, has lost pretty much everything in the last twelve months: her marriage, her parents, her job, and her house. She and
her dog, Murphy, have moved to the mountains of Pennsylvania into an old, remote, hunting camp her parents willed to her. On her first day there, along a desolate road she's been forced at gunpoint to haul a wounded man and his 'crew' to her house.

This week, I'm skipping ahead a few chapters.  Emmily is making a supply run. At the grocery store, Kade--one of her abductors--doesn't know what bananas are.

Last week ended with this:

He blushes and starts to stutter, trying to come up with some kind of explanation, I suppose.

Now, the  snippet:

“Bananas,” I say. "Lots of vitamins. Good choice."

We pick up several bunches, some ripe and some are green. I add bags of different fruit to let them try; they might have no idea what any of it is. In case, you know...they aren’t from around here…

As I make my rounds of the store, I pick up canned food by the case, and add a couple of large containers of coffee, too. Most of the blonds seem to like it—and have admitted they’ve never tried it before. Huh? Who has not at least taken a sip?

Yeah. Who hasn't at least tried coffee? More evidence that something isn't quite right.

The working blurb for this story follows:

After losing everything that bound her to her ordinary and happy life, Emmily has one plan: move to the mountains. Oh, and never give her heart away again.
But everything goes sideways when a UFO crash-lands on the next ridge over, and on a desolate road she’s waylaid by men demanding help for their injured ‘General’. He’s confused, bleeding, and sweet Lord, good looking—even while sneering and growling at her.
Fleeing an ambush meant to kill him, Gen Rael is gravely injured when his ship crashes on Earth. The human woman his crew captures to aid them is a confounding mixture of terrified, defiant, and beautiful. A female distraction is the last thing his hindered mission can afford. But this Emmily woman is cutting through the steel wall he keeps around his heart.
Despite being their hostage, Emmily isn’t blind to the peril they’re in: there’s a threat coming from the stars, and it’s lethal to all of them, including her.
And her simple plan to never-ever fall in love again? Looks like that’s in peril too…

That's it for this week. Thank you so much for visiting and for reading. :-)

  1. So many hints as to who they are! I wonder how she'll react when she finally comes to term with it.

    1. Haha! She's so slow accepting it. That might help stave off the shock. Thanks for visiting, Jessica! :-)

  4. I would love to hear a bit more about where she thinks they might be from. Surely she must be speculating like mad?

    1. She is, and she's using the process of deduction for where they might be from. She knows. She's in denial. She's already been through so much in the last year, she's avoiding slipping into a dark place by admitting what they are. Thanks, Ian!

  5. Sounds like her denial is starting to crack. Seriously, who can live without coffee?

  6. Love how her actions acknowledge that she intuits these folks are really not from here, but she isn't ready to admit out right. But then, how easily would any of us conclude folks are aliens?

    1. Exactly! Her denial has reasons, and she shares that with the readers via internal monologue. She is coping--over top of existing scared our of her wits. Thanks, Shari!

    1. She is, and her thoughts are coming, admitting to that, then reasoning why she's clinging to hope of a rational explanation. Thanks, Nancy!

    1. Haha! I used to have coffee soup for breakfast when I was little. I never did like the taste of that, but it was what I got. I can say I've tasted it though. But coffee lovers are devout when it comes to their brew. Thanks, Karen!

  9. I'm a non-coffee drinker, though I admit to having tasted it (that's how I know I dislike it). Bananas, though . . . who doesn't like bananas?

  10. Yeah, they're definitely not from around here. Wonder how long it will take her to figure it out.

  11. Let's hope they like coffee once they try it! And aren't allergic to it or anything...she's doing her best with the challenges...great snippet!

  12. Bananas are pretty universal, but to be fair, sometimes when I'm at an ethnic grocery store I have no idea what some of the stuff is. I like her process of trying to find out where they're from.

  13. I guess she's really trying not to go for the alien interpretation, but I love the way she/you hint at it all the time. "In case they aren't from around here." LOL Great story and Emmily is a great character!

  14. Bananas are good for you, the Doctor says so. :D I love the premise of this and can't wait to read more.

  15. My son would not enjoy this shopping trip. He doesn't like either bananas or coffee. As I was unconscious when he was born (emergency c-section) I suppose he could be an alien. ;-)
