This snippet is from Emmily, Unbound, an SFR story.
To read a compilation of all snippets posted for this story, click Here: Emmily Unbound, Chapters 1 & 2  Emmily, the main character, has lost pretty much everything in the last twelve months: her marriage, her parents, her job, and her house. She and
her dog, Murphy, have moved to the mountains of Pennsylvania into an old, remote, hunting camp her parents willed to her. On her first day there, along a desolate road she's been forced at gunpoint to haul a wounded man and his 'crew' to her house.

This week, I'm skipping ahead a few chapters.  Emmily is making a supply run. Kade has accompanied her to make sure she stays in line and doesn't contact authorities. They're at the grocery store.

Last week ended with this:

Most of the blonds seem to like it—and have admitted they’ve never tried it before. Huh? Who has not at least taken a sip?

Now, the  snippet:

Two heaping carts and another level cart later, we head to the checkout. I expect it to be a big bill, and I’m not disappointed. Kade studies the receipt as I load our haul into the car. I don’t think he grasps money denominations yet. But who knows? They seem to be picking up things fast, like English.

Who am I kidding? It’s the human language they’re learning, not just English. My heart speeds up.

A few more lines if you wish to read on:

No. Nope. Might be denial, but there’s some kind of reasonable explanation.

They’ve been here just one week, and they rarely pause while talking, and they no longer cock their heads like they did the first few days. Strange.

I can wonder about this later. Right now, I have a job to do.

It feels like it takes forever to get it all organized in the SUV. Then Kade says, “I have a list from Genrael.”

Now what do you suppose is on that list?

The working blurb for this story follows:

After losing everything that bound her to her ordinary and happy life, Emmily has one plan: move to the mountains. Oh, and never give her heart away again.
But everything goes sideways when a UFO crash-lands on the next ridge over, and on a desolate road she’s waylaid by men demanding help for their injured ‘General’. He’s confused, bleeding, and sweet Lord, good looking—even while sneering and growling at her.
Fleeing an ambush meant to kill him, Gen Rael is gravely injured when his ship crashes on Earth. The human woman his crew captures to aid them is a confounding mixture of terrified, defiant, and beautiful. A female distraction is the last thing his hindered mission can afford. But this Emmily woman is cutting through the steel wall he keeps around his heart.
Despite being their hostage, Emmily isn’t blind to the peril they’re in: there’s a threat coming from the stars, and it’s lethal to all of them, including her.
And her simple plan to never-ever fall in love again? Looks like that’s in peril too…

That's it for this week. Thank you so much for visiting and for reading. :-)

  1. I know a lot of people who don't understand money. For a lot of years, I was one of them. I always figured there would be more where what I just spent came from. Then I ended up disabled. Good times!

  2. She knows who they are in the back of her mind, but is still very much in denial. Great snippet!

  3. Every time someone vows never to fall in love again ends up falling off the wagon. I admire her determination, but looks like she's going to fail in that department. Neat snippet, Teresa!

  4. We always look for the reasonable explanation before making an impossible leap. But what is on that list, I wonder?

  5. I'm sure they're picking up on "human" things even faster than she realizes. I'm definitely curious about that list, too! Great snippet, Teresa!

  6. The image of three full carts really does speak of otherwordly needs. Denial is getting harder.

  7. The reference to Genrael's list makes me wonder what their plan is. Glad to see her denial is crumbling.

  8. Too many questions - where did they get the money to pay for supplies? I gather Emmily lost everything. And yes - what's on the ew list?

  9. I love the distinction between English and the human language. It's appropriate and a bit thought-provoking.

  10. Nice time to tell her there's another list! I agree with Ed's comment - really well done and cool distinction between the 'languages'. Great snippet!

  11. Argh - nothing like finding out there is another list when you think you are done shopping.

  12. Seems there is a plan coming to light. Telling her now seems as if is giving her little opportunity to say 'no.'

  13. Now that food is taken care of, I can only imagine what's on that list. I hope it's really random parts to repair their ship, like "duct tape" and "thermonuclear reactor."
