This snippet is from Emmily, Unbound, an SFR story. Emmily is having an argument with Adren about General.

Last week's snippet ended with: " You can never force someone to agree with an opinion. Like respect, people must come to it on their own.

The Snippet:

I hide back in my world again, in my mind, which would remain private if I could just keep from thinking out loud. My thoughts go back to last spring, two days after the divorce was final, when the police came to my front door. My parents were gone, stolen from me by a drunk driver. And then my blood pressure, along with my anxiety, soared, always waiting for another tragedy, another loss to grab my world, to suck something I love right up into a clear blue sky.

I can’t stop the bitter laugh as I shake my head. Yeah, I came up here to live a Zen writing life, to, among other things, get my blood pressure back to where it should be. Instead, I’m in a captive-not-captive situation, being held by aliens-not-aliens.

And let’s not forget that my muse seems horribly muddled by E.T.s and hostage situations. She’d been all but gone since the accident, so when she talked a little on the trip up here from the city, I was optimistic. Her voice seemed alright that day, maybe a little rusty but not contrary to everything I’ve written so far.

Read further to finish the scene.

Then, enter aliens, plastic ray-guns pointed at my head, and voila! She’s gone freaky on me again.

I guess she did talk a little the night General told me I could sleep in the bedroom. Big of him. But everything she said was crap. Cliché swill. I’ll never get this Civil War love story written.

That's it for this week. Thank you so much for visiting and for reading. :-)

  1. I think the story she's LIVING is much more entertaining than anything she could write.

  2. I'm with Nancy! She's got a bestseller on her hands. :D Loved this line: Instead, I’m in a captive-not-captive situation, being held by aliens-not-aliens. Great work, Teresa!

    1. Thanks, Julie!! I hope Emmily's character comes across strong. She has an odd way of looking at things, but at the same time, I hope she comes across as the woman down the street, the regular, everyday-girl who got dealt a crazy hand. :-)

  3. Hmmm, yes it would be hard to write a good Civil War story while in the midst of this scifi situation. Great snippet!

    1. It is. Impossible, actually, although she repeatedly tries. The Civil War story serves a purpose, though--to allude to something that's going on in Rael's part of the stars, and why assassins are on the way. :-)

      Thanks for visiting, Jean!

  4. Ah, she may be getting more inspiration than she realizes. And she may be living through a type of civil war. She just doesn't realize it yet. Will be interesting to see how this plays out!

    1. You must have a crystal ball! Picked right up on that civil war reference. :-)

      Thanks for visiting, Jessica!

  5. Yes, I caught the implications of the civil war reference. Does she realized she's in a love story?

    1. Not yet. :-) She will. Thanks for visiting, Aurora!

  6. I can relate. The pandemic and wildfires and riots and such totally sent my muse packing. Her situation is more fun though (because I get to read about it and not live through it!)

    1. It's crazy--the things that silence the muse. I'm glad Emmily's story is fun for you. lol Thanks, Alexis!

  7. Civil war love story. That is so telling of what's going on, as if she were somehow predicting her own future.

    1. Yeah. There's a reason that these guys crash-landed on Earth--and they aren't sharing it with Emmily. Someone must have been chasing them. :-) Thanks for visiting, Shari!

  8. I think she'll be able to incorporate her experiences into that story. She'll just have to realize it. Great snippet.

    1. Yep. I think the muse is swiping from real life. :-) There are odd similarities though that Emmily is unaware of. Thanks, Karen!

  9. I could be wrong, but I think I see the problem with her Civil War historical -- she's currently living a much more visceral primal story that would make any historical novel seem tame in comparison.

  10. This snippet says a lot about Emmily, her background, her emotions, her whole situation without the aliens. No wonder she can't write. I can relate to Emmily's situation. My muse disappeared last year amid covid lockdowns and my husband's health issues. I was just getting back into another Alex O'Hara story when Hubs fell and broke his neck. Muse isn't talking.

  11. Why do I get the funny feeling she's going to be knee deep in her own Civil War romance tale, but not the one she's writing? Great snippet to give us background and more of her character.
