A to Z: I is for Immersion

Short post today--though that might be a blessing. I've been known to be long-winded. :-)  Unplanned things going on, so I have a change up in my "I" word.

A young writer once gave me advice that I'll never forget. She told me that if I can't or don't  immerse myelf in the story, the reader never will either.

One of the ways I've learned to deeply immerse myself in my WIP is to "write in the moment".Much as the saying holds true. "We don't remember days, only moments.", when we write days, weeks, months or years, we tend to distance ourselves, lose the intimacy with the scene. But when we immerse ourselves in the story and write only moments at a time, we zoom in and make ourselves, and our readers part of it.

That's it for today.  Happy A to Z-ing.

  1. I needed this reminder! It's so easy to get immersed in other things, too, that pull you away from you WIP... I'm zooming in now. :D

  2. Absolutely. We have to be on fire with the stories we write. Who would catch it otherwise? :)

  3. that's why I don't write unless I have a few free hours. Once I'm back in that world it's not easy to leave.

    1. Oh my, so true. I think it actively connects the pleasure center of our brains with the act of writing. :-) Thanks, Susan. :-)

  4. I don't have a WIP but I like this advice for life in general. Dive in it's a good policy when engaging in lots of things...
