Weekend Writing Warriors July 7, 2018

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!
It's time for snips and bits of amazing tales by talented writers! Weekend Writing Warriors is a weekly bloghop. Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com, then post 8 to 10 sentences of their work, published or unpublished, on their own blog to go live by 9:00 AM Sunday, EST. Then we visit each other and read, comment, critique, encourage--all those things that do a solitary writer's heart good.
Snippet Sunday group from facebook--not us, but many of our participants do both, can be found HERE
This week's snippet is from "The Sands of Dhor".  Lily, abducted from Earth by alien slavers, is with Theusand. He's not a slaver, and he's just told her he wants to talk to her--alone. Then he delivered devastating news to her about her family ans the planet Earth.
This week's snippet picks up directly from last week's--which ended with:  However he knew, it was the truth. She crumbled.. Her reaction continues this week:

He grabbed her and held her while she cried. She didn’t know how long. Weakness turned to exhaustion, and finally she just wanted to die. Everything  and everyone she loved was gone, and she needed to be with them.

She tried to lie down on the floor. He held her. She tried to push him away, but his hold stayed fast. Finally he spoke, his soothing voice wrapping around her like a flannel quilt. “I can take away this pain, this… what your people call heartache.”

Hmm, be careful about agreeing to let someone remove painful memories...or any memories for that matter. Or maybe he really cares about her and wants to take away her pain??? :-)
FYI about this story. Since Veronica Scott very kindly offered advice on what romance readers might and might not stand for. It isn't SFR. It is SF with R elements. There is no HEA, but it does end on a happier uptick that will (hopefully) make readers say "I was hoping that was going to happen!". There will be a sequel. And SPOILER ALERT--Jobe, the dog, will be in it. :-)
That's it for this week.  All opinions greatly appreciated. :-) Thank you so much for visiting and
for commenting!

  1. Yeah, that might seem good in the short term, but I don't think it would be great overall.

  3. I'm torn between wanting him to take away the pain and suffering through it. He might take away more than I'd want. Good snippet. Terrible choice.

  4. Hmmm, take away the pain ... at what cost? I don't think he means badly, but I don't think it will end well.

  5. He can take away her pain? I can't wait to find out how he plans to do that. Great snippet!

  6. A heartbreaking moment indeed, but is it really worth getting rid of the pain? It may seem like it at first, but I don't think so in the end.

  7. Oh good, been wondering what had happened to the dog but didn't want to ask LOL! Well, you know I see everything through the prism of romance :) Interesting excerpt, it must feel enticing her in the moment to lose the painful memories.

  8. A real tearjerker! Though, I agree, she ought to be careful what she agrees to.

  9. Such a tempting offer at such a traumatic time. Will she relent? Can't wait to find out!

  10. Tempting, but I have a feeling she shouldn’t agree to that. So relieved the dog is still around!

  11. This snippet is full of emotion. So sad. Thanks for the clarification at the end. As a romance reader and writer, I appreciate it as I was expecting a little more romance, hehe. Still, glad to hear there will be a sequel and Jobe will be in it! <3

  12. I'd be careful of getting rid of my past even if the memories did hurt.

  13. I have a feeling she won't accept his offer. The pain and sorrow must be reckoned with. I experienced comments from loved ones who believed 'get over it, would help me. NO WAY! And I've hoped the pooch returns so kudos to you, dear friend.

  14. I like that he's offering to comfort her, at least. Also, a way to take away heartache! Sounds great! Until you realize that doing such a thing will probably have disastrous results. Also JOBE!!!!!

  15. I'd want to know the fine print on the this offer before accepting it. How would he get rid of the heartbreak -- by scrubbing her memory of her loved ones?

  16. Oh, gosh, no. There is no way to healthily take away the pain of a loss this big. Either ignorance or indifference would be needed, and both have serious downsides!

  17. Will she accept the offer? Cant wait to read on!

  18. Such a sad, poignant moment, and my own first thogt was tht he might mean it with the best of intentions, but removing the pain probably means removing he memories - and when one suffers terrible loss, the memories become incredibly precious, however painful.

  19. Tempting offer when she's feeling so vulnerable. Hmm... I wonder what she'll do?
