WeWriWa: Sporulators 5

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, where we share snips and bits of amazing tales by talented authors and writers. Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com then post 8 to 10 sentences of their work, published or unpublished (we like it all) on their own blog to go live by 9:00 AM each Sunday. Then we visit each other and read and comment, critique, encourage--all those things that do a solitary writer's heart good.
Snippet Sunday group from facebook, not us, but many of our participants do both, is HERE

This week's snippet is from a short story, 'Sporulators', more dystopian/scifi, than anything I've written to date.
Last week's excerpt ended with this:

"Klars smiled at him—a stiff, businesslike  smile. “Incalculable? Really, Eastwold?.

This is in Eastwold's POV.

The snippet:

The best, we sent the very best. The best equipment, the best supplies, the best people. And those people were armed with microscopes and analytical labs set up on each square kilometer of ground. DESA didn't treat this like voodoo or magic. It was science that went to Greenleyone--science wielded by intelligent men."

Eastwold mumbled as he spun around to face Checkup 17's controls, "Intelligent men and a whole raft of underpaid laborers."

"What did you say, Eastwold? I didn't quite catch it?"

Luke turned to face him again. "The point I'm trying to make, Klars, is that DESA was depending on the loyalty of people given little consideration."

That's it for this week. Thanks for visiting! I am truly grateful for comments, suggestions, and for you taking the time to read it.

  1. There is trouble afoot. Either they fight to the finish or hmm, I sense something awful is about to happen.

  2. One never knows what can happen in any given situation. The tension keeps building between these two regarding this situation. I wonder what it will take to get them on that planet. Great snippet!

  3. Ooh, this certainly is racking up the tension. I wonder whose fuse will burn through first!

  4. Things can happen even with the most intelligent people. It doesn't make them infallible. Great snippet

  5. Luke makes a valid point here. Minor nit - microscopes seem dated in this presumably far future setting. I enjoyed the snippet - this discussion between the two of them (both quite opinionated although I know which one I agtree with and it's not Klars LOL) is really fascinating.

  7. Somethings never change. Spend gazillions on the tech and then undercut the humans in charge of it. Luke is clearly more of the realist here in being able to perceive that.

      Tis true. :-)

      Thank you both!

    1. Oh, I hear you, Aurora. Age seems to make it worse though you'd think the reverse would;d be true. :-)

      Thanks for visiting. :-)

  9. Workers given no pay and little consideration. I think there's a word for that! In any case, such people are likely to feel resentment and rebel.
I've long appreciated dystopian fiction. Unfortunately, it has a tendency to feel way too real and/or possible.

  10. I'm loving the heated banter. I curious to know how it will all pan out.

  11. Luke is very wise. Workers given no consideration aren't likely to be that loyal or give 100 percent.
