This snippet is from Emmily, Unbound, an SFR story.
She and
her dog, Murphy, have moved to the mountains of Pennsylvania into an old, remote, hunting camp her parents willed to her. On her first day there, along a desolate road she's been forced at gunpoint to haul a wounded man and his 'crew' to her house.A week since the abduction has gone by. She's making a supply run. Kade--one of the aliens--has gone with her to make sure she doesn't contact authorities to alert them to alien presence.Last week ended with them arguing over cell-phone use.

I scroll through my search results and my eyes catch two words. I force myself to not react while I skim past them: gun powder.

I locate the closest places that have charcoal in stock; we head to the chain drug store.

They do have a small drugstore owned by the local pharmacist. Their online presence seems to brag that up. “Buy local, from a neighbor,” it reads. But since I now have half an idea what the blonds are doing with those ingredients, I really don’t want to be remembered or gossiped about by locals.  I figure I can’t avoid a security camera no matter where I go, but I stand a better chance of anonymity at the busy chain store.

When we put the charcoal in the car, I ask, “Is that it?”

A few more lines if you wish to read on:

“Do you have a device called a blender?”

“I’m pretty sure my mom’s is in a cupboard in the pantry nook.”

“Then we can go back to the cabin.”

“As soon as we make one more stop,” I say.

     “Where?”

     “The sporting goods store.”

     “For what?”

“You know, you’re pretty damned nosy. Don’t worry about it.”

He reaches to the ignition and grabs the keys before I start the car. “Emmily, I must know where you are going and what you need to buy. Tell me, please. You have no choice.”

Emmily is bent on buying something specific. This goes back to a need-to-buy list she made on her first night in the cabin. There's an argument ahead...

The working blurb for this story:

After losing everything that bound her to her ordinary and happy life, Emmily has one plan: move to the mountains. Oh, and never give her heart away again.
But everything goes sideways when a UFO crash-lands nearby, and on a desolate road she’s waylaid by men demanding help for their injured ‘General’. He’s confused, bleeding, and sweet Lord, good looking—even while sneering and growling at her.
Fleeing an ambush meant to kill him, Gen Rael is gravely injured when his ship crashes on Earth. The human woman his crew captures to aid them is a confounding mixture of terrified, defiant, and beautiful. A female distraction is the last thing his hindered mission can afford. But this Emmily woman is cutting through the steel wall he keeps around his heart.
Despite being their hostage, Emmily isn’t blind to the peril they’re in: there’s a threat coming from the stars, and it’s lethal to all of them, including her.
And her simple plan to never-ever fall in love again? Looks like that’s in peril too…

That's it for this week. Thank you so much for visiting and for reading. :-)

  1. Hmm, I have an idea I know what it is. Starts with a b and ends with a t.

    1. Yep! The exchange between Kade and Emmily does have a humorous misunderstanding.

      Thanks for visiting!

  2. Wonder what else she needs? And her captors are clearly sharp and cautious. Getting away from them won't be easy.

    1. They are--and getting away will be complicated by her growing affection for them. A touch of Stockholm Syndrome, perhaps?

      Thanks for visiting, Ian!

  3. Save us all from nosy demanding males! She's getting very adept at sneakiness.

  4. I'm so glad to read more about Emmily. What a nosy guy. I'm sure he has a right to be suspicious. She needs to be extra sneaky.

    1. She's trying to go at this head-on. Her problem is she's sort of hanging between liking them and wanting to help them, and wanting to get away from them. It's still pretty early. :-) Thanks for visiting! :-)

  5. I love when the H/h think they can get away with NOT falling in love. And I'm sure he's keeping a close eye on her for more reasons than her suspicious activity...

  6. Tense. Great details about the local pharmacy vs the chain - and the security footage. Little things make a story real.

  7. It sounds like her captors are strict but not, so far, causing her actual pain. That's a hopeful sign.

    1. Erm...pain could be in her future, but it isn't intentionally inflicted. :-) Thanks, Ed!

  8. Hmmm. Emmily doesn't seem terrified or her captor and seems ready to demand some autonomy. Well developed dynamics.

  9. Good. Time for her to stand up for herself. Whatever she is planning to buy.

    1. She's trying. Genrael kept Murphy--and threatened to do something to him if she didn't comply. Thanks for visiting, Aurora! :-)

  10. Love seeing her keep some room to maneuver especially as she is starting to grasp what is going on.

  11. I'm curious about what she wants to buy. Good for Emmily for standing up for herself, as hard as it is under the circumstances.

    1. Thanks, Carrie-Anne. It's a fine line keeping her between being too tough and too vulnerable. :-)

  16. Great instincts on her part about avoiding the local pharmacy. I only hope she can win the argument over her next purchase. Her captor sounds like he means business though. Getting worried for her...

    1. Thanks, Jenna! She has tough times ahead, but Kade won't be the instigator. :-)

  17. As little understanding as they have of human culture, I'm sure she could make up a completely BS story about what she wants to buy.
