Weekend Writing Warriors May 7, 2017

Hello fellow Warriors (and Snippeteers)!  Happy May! So many holidays in one short week. May Day, May the Fourth be with you--Star Wars Day, and Cinco de Mayo. Did I miss any?

It's time for snips and bits of amazing tales by talented writers! Weekend Writing Warriors is a weekly bloghop. Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com, then post 8 to 10 sentences of their work, published or unpublished, on their own blog to go live by before 9:00 AM Sunday, EST. (We check signups to remove links when we don't find a wewriwa post--to save our participants from clicking on empty links--so please have it live by 9:00 Sunday morning--eastern USA). Then we visit each other and read, comment, critique, encourage--all those things that do a solitary writer's heart good.
This week's snippet from *name change alert* Dhor'en Sands (it might still change again):  Lily is following Theusand. They've just gone down a set of steps. It's the first time (in weeks) she's leaving the floor she's been on since Lord Sand rescued her from the slave fight ring in the belly of the ship.  The last line last week was.
Memories of Ben and the girls jumped to the forefront, reminding her that her precious little family had always been, and still were her true destiny. "
Here we go...
She stifled her thoughts; Theusand was about as weird and unpredictable as she’d seen him. It wasn’t the time to push that button—the one where she had a life and a family before she knew him.
She exhaled when he appeared to ignore her thoughts of home and changed the subject.
“I want you to see the ship and the good people who crew it. They are curious about you.”
“Why do they even know about me?”
She felt him smile. "In any group, any culture, there is always talk about others, especially those who seem secretive or mysterious. What your kind refer to as gossip. I have lived with it all of my life because I am a Dhor'en Sand."

What works and what doesn't? I'm grateful for every bit of feedback you share.
A short note about sidebar promos.  :-) Sidebar promos spots are available at no cost as a perk of regularly participating in Weekend Writing Warriors. 9. Hmm, I don't know if finding out the others on the ship are gossiping about her is a good or bad thing, giving their penchant for fights to the death and all. Intriguing snippet.

  13. I liked that he ignored her thoughts of home. It made me wonder whether he doesn't care or is being polite or perhaps even has some sort of filters in place and thus didn't even notice

She's not the only one who's mysterious. Such interesting characters. Very nicely written, Teresa! :)

  19. I love these snippets every week! I'm so concerned with Lily and want to see her get back home. Somehow being shown off to the crew sounds like a bad thing to have happen, although I hope I'm wrong. Keep the snippets coming, Teresa!

  22. It's so true about gossip. That's a universal thing, no matter what kind of world or culture.

  23. I like her trying to squash thoughts of home to keep them from him, but I would almost rather we get a peek at the same time he does...

  24. People are social creatures, and gossip is the glue that holds us together.
I bet trying not to think about something is impossible, though!
