Weekend Writing Warriors March 26, 2017

Hello fellow Warriors (and Snippeteers)! First, a short note about sidebar promos.  :-) Sidebar promos spots are available at no cost as a perk of regularly participating in Weekend Writing Warriors. If you're interested, all we need is an email from you that includes the link to the Amazon page of the book you'd like to see on our sidebar. Our email address is: wewriwa at yahoo dot com

It's time for snips and bits of amazing tales by talented writers! Weekend Writing Warriors is a weekly bloghop. Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com, then post 8 to 10 sentences of their work, published or unpublished, on their own blog to go live by before 9:00 AM Sunday, EST. (We check signups to remove links when we don't find a wewriwa post--to save our participants from clicking on empty links--so please have it live by 9:00 Sunday morning--eastern USA). Then we visit each other and read, comment, critique, encourage--all those things that do a solitary writer's heart good.
This week's snippet:  Moving ahead in my WIP, jumping many chapters to give you a glimpse of the male MC--a very complex soul. He is alien, capable of reading minds, and Lily has just had an argument with one of his Chays (sort of like monks. They care for him and help with his task on the ship.) The argument was ugly, and Theusand disciplined his Chay upon his return to his quarters. In case you don't recall, this is Lord Sand, and no one may gaze upon his icy blue eyes without first being invited by him to do so. He's just explained where she should walk--relative to him. Please excuse creative punctuation used  to stay within guidelines. The last line last week was was, "
You will walk only one half step behind, nearly beside me.”

Only one half step? Hell, she should kiss his feet for letting her be danged near his equal. She struggled to keep her rage unspoken. As if it would make any difference if she managed to stifle the words; he already knew every venomous thought swirling in her head.

Her husband was nothing like this despicable excuse for a man. Ever since their wedding day, she and Ben were a fifty-fifty team, raising children, paying the bills, and in everything else they did. There was never a time he’d given her reason to think she was less in his eyes. That’d be the day--the damned day— he’d ever tell her to walk half a step behind him.
She had to get home, back to him, back to a world that made sense. She wanted to scream.

This scene is not over... That's it for this week. What works and what doesn't? I'm grateful for every bit of feedback you share.

"Theusand slid his hood back, revealing ice, and then looked at Lily, seeming to study her. His expression was unreadable and terrifying at once.  “Walk with me.”

Fear overrode Lily’s knee-jerk response to tell him to kiss her Earth ass, too. What did it matter? He'd known it as soon as she'd thought it, and from the look on his face, he didn’t like it one bit. She followed him out the door.

He slowed in the hallway, motioning for her to walk near his side. “You are not a Chay who is vowed to serve me, to be at my beck and call, and to follow at five paces. You will walk only one half step behind, nearly beside me.”

Wow--he is generous, huh? Only a half step behind. Bet she doesn't like that one bit. :-)

Weekend Writing Warriors July 3, 2016

Hello all my fellow Warriors (and Snippeteers)! :-)  If you are in the USA, happy Independence Day weekend. If you are somewhere else in the world...happy 4th of July weekend. :-)
Weekend Writing Warriors is a weekly bloghop.  Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com, then post 8 to 10 sentences of their work, published or unpublished, on their own blog to go live before 9:00 AM Sunday EST.               Snippet Sunday group from facebook--not us, but many of our participants do both, can be found HERE

Setup:  Earth has been invaded by aliens, galactic slavers. Our MC, Lily, and her dog, Jobe, were captured.  Moving ahead a little in the story: They were loaded onto a shuttle and their captors have just hauled them off the surface into space.  They were transferred to a large holding cell filled with creatures of all sorts, and none seemed friendly until some French speaking Earthlings were thrown into the same cell. It feels like days since they've had anything to eat. Something is happening...

Scraping metal turned to a high screech. Every living thing in the room—with the exception of her and her new companions-- moved, scrambling toward the center of the floor. Jobe barked, but it didn’t sound like he was warning her of a threat.
Bright lights came on, then a panel in the ceiling slid open. Something dumped through the new hole above them, landing in a splattering heap. Lily watched the melee with disbelief.
Her cellmates hit each other and growled while they grabbed slop from the mystery mound. Their hands stuffed the dripping mess into their mouths. She turned to her new companions and motioned toward the pile before she ran to it. She had no idea what she was grabbing, but when she left the frenzy, she had two fists full.

That's it. What works? What doesn't? Even though it's published, I appreciate your comments and learn from them. :-)

Weekend Writing Warriors April 17, 2016

Hello all my fellow Warriors (and Snippeteers)!. :-)
Weekend Writing Warriors is a weekly bloghop.  Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com, then post 8 to 10 sentences of their work, published or unpublished, on their own blog to go live between noon, Saturday, and 9:00 AM Sunday EST. Then we visit each other and read, comment, critique, encourage--all those things that do a solitary writer's heart good.

Setup:  Earth has been invaded by aliens. Our MC, Lily fled on foot. Her and her dog, Jobe, were captured by the aliens.
I've skipped ahead a couple of paragraphs. Lily is on the ground with her wrists and ankles secured. It is dawn, and the alien commander and Lily just locked eyes. She demanded to know why.

His voice, as lifeless as his pale face, was devoid of emotion—at least any she could detect. “It is business.” He came closer, leaned over and ran his hand across the scab on her cheek.
She jerked her head away and fairly growled through gritted teeth, “Don’t touch me, you liar.”
A mocking grin appeared on his face. “Liar?”
“Liar. If it were business, you’d take no pleasure, but I see how much you enjoy it.”
One scaly eyebrow went up, and his smile faded. “Your kind does not take pleasure in business?”

Thank you for reading it. I learn from your comments--and I'm so grateful for any insight you share. Have a great week!

Weekend Writing Warriors April 10, 2016

Hello all my fellow Warriors (and Snippeteers)!. :-)  We're getting a shot of winter tonight. <-- I wrote that last week, too. Two inches of snow on my tulips this morning, and 14 degrees F tonight should just about freeze any fruit buds and lilac buds. ~big sigh~

Setup:  Earth has been invaded by aliens. Our MC, Lily fled on foot. Her and her dog, Jobe, were just captured by the aliens.
I've skipped ahead a couple of paragraphs. Lily is on the ground with her wrists and ankles secured. The aliens are falling asleep, and she's having a moment of reflection of what brought her to this moment. Jobe is right next to her. Last week's snippet ended with this:
"How stupid they'd been, counting on the mountains and rough terrain between home and New York to slow down aliens who had traveled across a galaxy, maybe even across the universe."
We pick up from there:

~As it was, Pittsburgh had still been full of people who didn't get away, adding to the thousands and thousands trapped as the Bulragers raced west.
She and Damien discussed it. Their best plan was to make a run for Ohio, and try to stay in front of the alien advance. They’d agreed that no matter what officials said, there was no way the government could guarantee that fleeing refugees wouldn’t starve. So while she threw survival essentials into backpacks, Damien headed out to load up on anything he could scrounge. He was on I-279, trying to get back home when he called. That was the last time she talked to him.
He was still alive; she knew it.   He’d been an Army Ranger, and it'd take more than an alien invasion to stop him.~

Weekend Writing Warriors April 3, 2016

Hello all my fellow Warriors (and Snippeteers)!. :-) Happy  April!   We're getting a shot of winter tonight. ~sigh~ It will go soon enough.

Weekend Writing Warriors is a weekly bloghop.  Each week, participants sign up HERE at wewriwa.com, then post 8 to 10 sentences of their work, published or unpublished, on their own blog to go live between noon, Saturday, and 9:00 AM Sunday EST. Setup:  Earth has been invaded by aliens. Our MC, Lily fled on foot. Her and her dog were just captured by the aliens.
Tentatively, it was a chapter end. I've skipped ahead a couple of paragraphs. Lily is on the ground with her wrists and ankles secured. For the animal lovers--Jobe is right next to her:
~Looking up at the stars, her tears finally came. Tears for her children—she  prayed they were safe. The government bus she’d put them on nearly two weeks ago was headed to Alaska. The aliens had shown no interest in colder regions, so her little girls were in a  refugee camp far up north, along with her sister, her nephews, niece , and her brother in law.  She didn’t regret it though—staying behind to try to find Damien. He’d have done the same.
News had come via the Emergency Broadcasting System that heavy Bulrager reinforcements arrived in New York City.  No one knew what to think--until the aliens started to move in mass numbers. Still, she and Damien never dreamed they'd have only two days to get out before the invaders reached Pittsburgh's suburbs.  How stupid they'd been, counting on the mountains and rough terrain between home and New York to slow down aliens who had traveled across a galaxy, maybe even across the universe.~

That's it for this week. Thank you for reading it. I learn from your comments--and I'm so grateful for any insight you share. Have a great week!
